The Cell Phone Frenzy

I don’t understand all of that anymore. Maybe I am simply too old at this point, to get infected by the cell phone hype. That’s quite possible.

The German word for cell phone is “Handy”. Americans always get a kick out of that when I tell them. I guess the Germans thought of a “handy” phone, since they are so small. The cell-phones, not the Germans.

I used to say to my German and American friends: “The United States are the world leaders if it comes to ideas or inventions nobody on earth really would ever need. And the Germans are the first people who have to copy all that crap.” I guess I am politically entitled to make that statement, since I am both, German and American.

But back to the blessing of the modern cell phone. I don’t know about you, but aren’t you also just amazed by the speed some people are able to compose a message on the keyboard of a cell phone? It takes me at least five minutes to get a simple sentence together.

My two teenage daughters, though, can write a whole book in the exact same amount of time. My youngest daughter does everything with her cell phone. She’s on the internet while texting with friend number A, while she’ s on the speaker phone communicating with friend number B.

I can’t do that. I am lucky when I find a contact information of someone I had added to the address book formerly. Once by accident I realized one day – after over a full year of using my phone – that there was actually a camera that was able to shoot pictures and videos. Plus an integrated mp4 player. Not that I would ever consider using any of that, but still…

Today I came across with an German Internet posting. The author wrote about a so called “Outdoor Handy”. I have never heard of such a thing before. But unsurprisingly, those phones were built for people who love to expose their little media to the outdoors world. They are plain in functionality, but forgive you little bumps and accidental drops that may occur every now and then.

And here’s the thing: it even comes with a carabineer hook. So you can hook it up to your rucksack or belt while you are outdoors, trying to climb up the Mount Everest, for example. Because it’s important that you always have access to your cell phone!

Imagine you are up in 25.000 feet and suddenly feel urged by some strange sensation, that you right in this very moment, need to check the balance of your checking account with your bank.

That’s why a Handy comes in “handy”, no matter when and where we are.

Leslie East writes reviews about cell phones in German like:” handy neuheiten ” and also talks about how to find the best cell phones for little money on his blog called:” neue handys “.
