It is commonly understanded that our calls to huge associations will be recorded due to training and security purposes as we are typically played a recorded message to tell us of this when we place a call. But what is the reasoning behind this?

– They can hear how we are promoting them and understand the beef we're coming up against
– Working with our clients to find the ideal “pitch” generates far better results

Nonetheless the part I benefit from most is by paying attention to myself speaking and getting to a point where, as a buyer, I’d be interested.

WHY BOTHER?

It’s not just the “pitch” that generates results though. It’s how you approach each call.

It’s staggering how much you’ll learn and while you may at first wince at seeing/hearing yourself, that will quickly get replaced by groveling at some of the lines you will be innocently & honestly delivering.

Stick at it for a day and whilst your volume of calls will necessarily suffer on that day as you'll be reviewing each call, your confidence will grow and your output will increase seriously.

Duplicate this each month and you may stay strongly in touch regardless of whether it isn't something you’ll look forward to!

Did you ever do the math on Marketing? Let me explain this a bit more so you understand where I am going with this. We all know that successful marketing is about first attracting and then converting a prospect to a customer. There are many ways to attract new prospects but the best Marketing Strategy is to NEVER rely on any one media. So, let’s explore some of the vehicles available to you to attract.

You can use small ads strategically placed in papers, magazines and flyers to target specific market segments you are going after. When you do this you are using both off and on-line marketing and it is important that you pay attention to both. The simple part of the exercise is often to get the interest of a prospect. In any economy growth requires sales leads. It’s always best to provide your sales team with an abundance of solid leads so they can focus on closing and sell with confidence.

The first step in the sales funnel is to sort through “suspects” and identify real, genuine “prospects”. This step produces the “warm leads” that your sales team should be focusing on. Cold calling is one of the best ways to accomplish this.

Effective cold calling requires Five Steps:

One – identify your target market. This is obvious, but often given too little attention. Take the time to identify your best customers. In most businesses these are the customers that provide 80% of your profit – not to be confused with revenue. That is, they are relatively inexpensive to get/serve/retain. They don’t complain, they don’t return things, they pay on time. Don’t you love these guys? You need more of them. Let your competitors have the others.

Two – determine your message. You will have only 10-15 seconds to impress positively. You must correctly identify a need that they have and how your solution is right for them. Your challenge is to be professional, yet personable. Knowledgeable, but not intimidating.

Three – prepare for the obvious objections. Sure, some objections just can’t be foreseen (like, I’m quitting this job next month and could not care less about your services!) but most objections can pretty easily be anticipated. You top sales people can help you with this, believe me.

Now spend some time devising elegant ways to deal with each objection and have your cold calling team practice them until they are confident. Then, get them to practice them until they become natural and almost 2nd nature to them. Extra time spent on this step will prove invaluable.

Four – Listen-up! Coach your cold callers to listen attentively. That means tolerating those awkward pauses that sometimes occur. When your callers are talking they are giving away information. When they are listening they are learning. So, remind them to listen more than talk. This one is tough.

Five – close the sale. That is, ask to schedule the next appointment for contact. Even when the conversation has not been great, we coach our callers to ask for the appointment anyway. We’re often surprised and elated when the prospect readily agrees to a next meeting when the conversation was not the best.

Often your highly trained and technically astute sales people will not enjoy cold calling. They thrive on using their unique expertise to solve customer problems and win orders. Cold calling is nerve-wracking (many declines) and takes a special person, measured and compensated in specific ways. So, segment the cold callers and measure and compensate them differently. Or, consider outsource the cold-calling effort completely. Many fast growing companies prefer to do so. It can be the most cost-effective, flexible and effective way to manage this important initial step in the sales process.

Keeping the sales lead pipeline full and your best salespeople focused on genuine opportunities is the best growth strategy for this – or ANY – economy.
