Cell Phones – How Do They Work?

If you ask someone how a cell phone works you will likely get an answer involving radios and signals, but the odds are it will not be very clear. Considering how integral they are to a communications based society, it is kind of funny how so few people really understand how they work. This report will present a few facts to make sense of it all and explain cell phones’ innovations over the preceding technology.

Before cell phones became so ubiquitous, people on the cutting edge of communications technology had car phones. They worked on the same principles as a radio but it had a few limited features. For one, it was connected to only one central antenna per city, and each car needed a transmitter big enough to transmit up to forty or fifty miles. Each central antenna had twenty-five channels. The car phone was a big step over “half duplex radio,” or walkie talkies, which used only one frequency. As a result, only one person could talk at a time while the other person had to listen. In car radios (and cell phones) each transmitter uses different frequencies, so you can talk and listen at the same time.

But cell phones function way more efficiently than car phones because the city is divided up into different transmitting areas, called “cells” (hence the term “cell phone”) rather than using one central antenna. Each cell takes up about ten square miles, and this division allows the same signals to get reused across the city. Essentially, cell phones no longer require you to be in contact with one base anymore. There are now not only more towers, but the technology has expanded to allow you to utilize their power interchangeably. When you turn on your cell phone, after you have established communication with your base station, your phone sends out a registration request that keeps track of what cell of the city you are in. When you are on the border of one cell it registers that you are losing signal power, but simultaneously you gain signal strength from the cell you are approaching. As a result, you can be in the middle of a conversation and switch from cell to cell and you’d have no idea that anything is different. Indeed, most people don’t know that they’re in a “cell” in the first place.

There is an old joke about the Soviets during the Cold War who were convinced they had superior technology because they had the biggest computers in the world. Sometimes less is more, and this is very true of cell phones. One of the biggest innovations was the realization that actually it was better to have lower power transmitters in order to consume less power. This is why cell phones are able to have such a small battery. The key isn’t raw power, but portability.

Bell has changed the industry here in Canada by joining with Telus in adopting a technology known as HSPA (High Speed Packet Access). This improves cell phone performance by refining the communication process between individual handsets and bases. Essentially, it is a technology that better utilizes existing radio bandwidth. Though several breakthroughs were necessary to usher in the modern era of cellphone technology, it still boils down to radios and signals!

The Invention Of Cell Phones

Images of old cell phones from the 90s are a surefire way to spark laughter-they are big, cumbersome, and look ridiculously outdated compared to the small gizmos we have today. So it should be surprising to learn that the first conception of crude, mobile phones actually dates all the way back to 1947. Researchers tried to evolve the technology used in walkie talkies. They realized that by using small cells instead of relying on single frequencies they could reuse the same frequencies, and thereby dramatically increase the traffic capacity. In other words, the initial kernel of invention was present, but unfortunately its potential was halted.

The FCC (the organization in the U.S which regulates anything to do with broadcasting or sending television or radio waves) blocked AT & T’s request to allocate a large number of radio spectrum frequencies. This would have provided the groundwork for widespread cell phone use and would have given AT & T incentive to further develop the technology. Under the strict FCC regulations of the time, airwaves only allowed for twenty-three phone conversations to take place at any given time. This mentality was symbolic of the limited understanding of cell phone technology’s potential. In hindsight it looks like a boneheaded decision, but it should be remembered that this was 1947, so the FCC should be at least partially excused for not understanding the full implications of modern communications technology. Still though, the idea lay buried for decades.

It wasn’t until 1973 when Dr. Martin Cooper, former general manager of the Systems division at Motorola, was credited with making the first ever call on a portable cell phone-a privilege he enjoyed as its chief creator. Ironically, the first call was made to the head of research labs at Bell, their chief competitor. Perhaps this was actually fitting since Bell was responsible for inventing the crude mobile phone that was designed to be used in police cars in the 40s. Four years later, Bell created a prototype that was used on trial in Chicago by up to two thousand people. Two years after that, in a completely unrelated venture, a separate operation was undertaken in Tokyo. There was considerable international buzz about the new technology as it went from being something existing only in science fiction to something that would appear imminently.

In 1981 Motorola joined with American Radio Telephone to start a second U.S. cellular telephone system test in Washington and Buffalo. The movement was gaining momentum, and by 1982 the FCC finally authorized commercial cellular services for the United States. Ameritech made the first American commercial analog cellular service available in Chicago. Still, the technology was expensive and it was far from being as accessible as cell phones are today. But by 1987 cellular phone subscribers exceeded one million and airways were crowded.

The 90s brought on a new wave of cell phone technology that ushered in the modern era where one belongs to the average person. Yes, those big 90s clunkers look old, but who would have believed that the cell phone was actually conceived of so many decades ago?

A great function of a laptop is its ability to pick up the internet wirelessly without having to pay anything for the connection. This is a great feature that only laptops have.

A desktop requires you to go to an ISP, internet Service Provider, and pay for your own connection. These vary vastly in price and depending on where you live; you may not have a particularly fast or reliable connection.

Laptops can now be picked up for very reasonable prices, a couple of hundred bucks in some places. Add to this the advantages I’ve already listed and I seriously think that Laptops are the only way to go.
