Legal education refers to those courses which have the aim of equipping students with the necessary theoretical and practical skills required to take up a career in the legal field. These courses lead to professions such as lawyers, notaries and procurators. There is in fact several careers tat one can take up after following such courses. As a result the course programs are intensive and wide-ranging. The courses range from undergraduate degrees to doctorate levels.
Every university will have its specific programmed of studies for each course. This will be greatly affected by the legal system of the country in question. However the study units are generally very similar to each other. The main fields include criminal law, family law, international law and commercial law.
The entry requirements tend to be quite restrictive in most universities. During the course, students will be required to sit for several exams, write assignments and dissertations, and sometimes even carry out a period of practical on-the-job sessions prior to being awarded their degree. The course extends over a period of a minimum of three years in most countries. Subsequent masters and doctorate programs can then be followed.
Theoretical topics are common in these courses. These include anthropology, philosophy and psychology. Inevitably the constitution of the country will be studied in detail and so will several other laws and codes of conduct. The legal system of the country will also be studied, with regards to the functions and roles of parliament, president, ombudsman and other important bodies.
Politics and policies will also be included. Police powers, privacy issues, personal liberty and similar topics are also covered. Commercial laws and industrial legislation will be given importance as well, since many will be practicing as legal advisors for businesses and organizations once they graduate.
Another major branch in these courses is criminal law. This is a very broad subject and several cases are studied too so as to give the students a more practical understanding of what the laws will be like when applied in real case scenarios. Family law and human rights are also important parts of the course programmers. So are property laws with regards to ownership rights, letting and hiring.
