Google Nexus S : Is It Worth The Money?

The Nexus S is the latest handset to be released from internet search giant Google. Unlike its preceding model, the Nexus One which was manufactured by Taiwanese corporation HTC, the Nexus S is being built by the Korean company Samsung. For this reason, you may be forgiven for thinking that it is just another Samsung Galaxy with a different name, though there are a few details which set it apart from the Galaxy series.

So what has this new Google/Samsung collaboration got to set it apart from the competition? The primary feature that has everybody talking is the latest form of the very popular Google Android OS, which has now reached version 2.3. Version 2.3, or Gingerbread to give it its codename, promises to bring much better touchscreen support, faster processing and more complete functioning compared with version 2.2. A super powerful 1GHz Hummingbird central processing unit is being incorporated into the internal specifications, along with 512MBs of RAM to help power Gingerbread to its fullest capabilities.

Unfortunately the one thing that is supposed to make this phone great, the updated Android OS, is the one thing that brings the Nexus S back down into the chasing pack of the Apple iPhone. The operating system, although better than previous versions, is still not as complete and capable as the Apple operating system. Although it is easier to say than to do, Google really should be aiming at more than what they have achieved and it is disappointing to say that it still feels lacking in many areas.

Buying a smartphone in today’s market it seems is all about how much you like, or how quickly you can learn an operating system, rather than the internal specifications. Most top level handsets are very similar in capabilities but ultimately it is how they perform functions that sets them apart. This is what makes the Nexus S easily the best Android phone available today, but also co-currently, what still puts it firmly behind the Apple iPhone 4G.

HTC HD7 – How Good Is It?

The smartphone market is crowded, meaning there’s pressure for phones to stand out. Microsoft are now getting in on the act with their Windows 7 phones, one of which is the HTC HD7. How good is the phone and does it live up to Microsoft’s reputation? The camera on the phone could be called somewhat annoying as, although the focusing is good, it’s a bit hit and miss in terms of picture quality. Also, you have to re-set the video app settings every time you use it, which isn’t ideal.

A big feature of the HTC HD7 is the display and this works as both a good and bad thing. The 4.3inch screen is great for reading websites and makes it easier to do things with the phone in general. Text input is great, too. The problems, though, include the fact the pixel density is quite low, the screen feels at times too big and the viewing angles aren’t particularly great. This means that compared to other phones, the quality of the display just isn’t that good.

In terms of the software, the HTC HD7 is similar to other Windows 7 phones, which is to say that it’s good. It also has some additions, including a weather app, Notes feature and a Photo Enhancer. The Notes app is interesting but has a word limit so you can’t write a huge amount on there. While the Photo Enhancer doesn’t actually do a huge amount to enhance your photos, it does have a good range of features for fiddling with the look of photos, which is fun.

In terms of its hardware, the HTC HD7 benefits from being an entertainment phone. The volume controls and camera buttons built into the casing are a great feature, as are the two speakers framing the large display. There are, however, a few niggles in terms of the construction materials. Firstly, while the phone is undoubtedly solid and serviceable, it feels a bit loose because most of the rigidity comes from a metallic band and the display. Also, the back is made of rather flimsy plastic.

In conclusion, this is a decent phone with some excellent points, but it isn’t perfect. The features that let it down include poor display contrast, lack of good viewing angles and the build quality, all of which are a bit distracting. Similarly, the sound quality from the speakers isn’t great. However, the additional apps are a nice touch and the software is a good offering from Microsoft. The size of the phone and the big screen are other points in its favor, making it a good investment.
